St. Louis will be celebrating the most important and best food
item in the entire universe: BACON
Without bacon life would be sad, food would be boring and the birds would not chirp. So to bacon, we have created an entire day of revelry all in the name
of bacon. With 10,000 anticipated guests in attendance, Baconfest will be the ultimate appreciation to everything bacon. The free all-day festival will features food vendors creating bacon-inspired dishes, bacon infused drinks, live music, bacon merchandise, and bacon art and bacon activities for the entire family.
The centerpiece of Baconfest will be the World’s Largest Hog Log
with a WORLD RECORD weight of 500 POUNDS cooked in a custom-built smoker...the ultimate bacon glory! Once cooked, Baconfest guests will have
an opportunity to purchase a piece of history!
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BACONFEST ST. LOUIS
In November 2011, two St. Louis cohorts Matthew Willer & Matthew Guillot created an 8 lb Hog Log. They used twice the amount of meat that the recipe called for. This got Willer thinking BIG. VERY BIG. At the time the record for the world’s largest Hog Log was a mere 60 lbs. Such lame poundage yields only moderate bacon glory. Willer chose to squash this record and conceived the idea for a world record 120 lb hog log.
The world record event was set to occur just three weeks after the idea was conceived. TEAM BACON (about 25 of Willer’s closest friends) worked together to plan the event, creating a custom-built 12 foot long smoker to house and cook a veritable cornucopia of baconness. On November 26 2011, the bar was raised when Team Bacon created a 120 lb Hog Log setting the world record for Largest Hog Log Ever. The feat caught the attention of local media resulting in an article in the Riverfront Times, two radio interviews, and several live morning segments on St. Louis Fox 2 News.
